Changing the Battery in Your Mazda 3 Key Fob
It is frustrating to get in your car at the end of a long workday and discover that the key fob is dead. This is a simple solution that can be accomplished at a major box retailer or hardware store.
The addition of a spare key fob to your Mazda 3 can be an inexpensive way to save yourself from the hassle of being towed to the dealership and having them reprogram your keys.
Battery Replacement
You can replace the battery on your Mazda 3 keyfob at home. But, you should only replace the battery if it dies, or if the key fob displays a message in the multi-information display that reads, "Low key fob battery. Replace battery."

In addition, if your key fob is exposed to salt or seawater, it may be damaged. The rubber seals on the electronic chip may be penetrated by water, especially when it is submerged for an extended period of time like in the ocean or a pool at the beach. The chip could stop working and require replacement of the keyfob. If you have a programmable key it is possible to clean the chip using isopropyl alcohol or an electronic cleaner to help it get back to its original functionality. If this doesn't work, the chip is likely to be damaged and will need to be replaced.
Locking/unlocking the Doors
The buttons on the key fob transmit electronic signals to the solenoid in the car, which then transforms this signal into a mechanical action. This locks and unlocks doors.
